Stanford Paper Bike

A long standing tradition in Stanford ME310’s course history has been the paper bike race. In this competition, team’s are tasked to build self-propelled handicap usable bikes using only cardboard and duct tape. The bike that my team and I created is propelled using the riders hands and turning the back wheels. It was designed to mimic the ergonomics of a traditional wheelchair. The bike features roller bearings created using paper straws between the wheel wells and axle as well as laser cut wheels and decals. In the 2021 competition, our bike had the fastest overall lap time in the the speed trial and got first in the obstacle course challenge.
